The temple is the geographic and ceremonial hub of Madurai and is split into a series of concentric quadrangular enclosures surrounded by towering brick walls. It is one of the rare Tamil Nadu temples with four gates facing four directions. This temple consists of four towers, each of which is beautifully painted with hundreds of coloured images. There are an additional eight towers and a hall with a thousand ornamented pillars. The Thousand Pillar Hall is a temple complex that has a museum that comprises frozen stones and bronze statues of Hindu deities.

What to remember :

• A dress code is required to enter places of worship  
• No shorts or sleeveless tops allowed. 
• Knees and shoulders MUST be covered for both men and   women. 
• Guests may not be allowed to enter if you fail to comply with these dress requirement. 
• All kind of electronic items are not permitted to carry into the temple.
