The Valley of Flowers is over 10 kilometres long, 2 kilometres wide, and concave in shape, set amidst spectacular snow-clad mountains that stand in strong relief against the horizon. It is separated along its length by the Pushpawati, a small river, and other minor streams and waterfalls that flow down from glacier deposits to join it. At Ghangria, the Pushpawati meets the Laxman Ganga, which flows from Hemkund Sahib. This merged stream is known as the Laxman Ganga until it enters the Alaknanda at Govind Ghat.

Ghoradhungi, a large snow-covered peak, covers the valley at the opposite end. However, there is a historic path that over a glacier pass at a height Valley and finally goes to Niti, the last Indian settlement on the Tibetan border.
