Ken River Lodge began modestly in 1986, as one of the country's pioneers of wildlife tourism. Shyamendra Singh, grandson of the Maharaja of Nagod, was inspired to construct the lodge by his enthusiasm for wildlife and conservation. The lodge is located on a 50-acre woodland estate and was created using natural materials collected primarily from neighbouring communities and adjacent locations. Many animals, birds, and reptiles live on the estate's woodland grounds.

The accommodations are modest and rustic, with only a few modern conveniences. The six huts and six cottages are spaced out on undulating terrain in a mixed forest, providing a jungle experience that few in the country can match. The lodge also has a 3000 square foot. Machaan is the location where meals are served. The machaan, also known as the Tree House, serves delicious home cooked meals and overlooks the Ken River.
